Welcome to the American Russell Terrier Club, Inc.
The American Russell Terrier Club "ARTC" is an organization
dedicated to the Russell Terrier. We are committed to the
promotion, breeding, working, improvement, and the continuance of
the old traditional Russell Terrier developed in Australia since
the early 60's. The breed originated in England in the 1800's,
from the Reverend John Russell's strains of fox working terriers.
These terriers were utilized for the purpose of hunting red fox
above and below ground. The Reverend's fox working terriers
evolved into two distinctly separate breeds, the Parson Russell
Terrier developed in England and the Russell Terrier, using
parallel breeding strains. The small 10" to 12" size of the
Russell Terrier, combined with their small chest and instinct for
vermin, make them the ultimate working earth terrier.
The American Russell Terrier Club was founded in 1995. It was the
first registry in the US to maintain the Russell Terrier as a
separate breed from the Parson Russell Terrier. The purpose was to
preserve and promote this old traditional working terrier in its
original form to eventually seek Kennel Club recognition. The "ARTC"
ushered the Russell Terrier into the AKC FSS Program with their
final acceptance December 8, 2004.
The "ARTC" advocates the traditional purpose of the breed going
back to the hunt fields in England, always striving for a balance
of form and function, moderation in all aspects. Russell Terrier:
slightly longer body proportions as compared to the Parson Russell
Terrier, straight forelegs, small, flexible chest, predominantly
white with various color patterns. The ideal height is from 10" to
12". Temperament is alert and ready for any task.
The American Russell Terrier Club is the AKC Parent Club for the
breed. Our greatest responsibility and honor is to preserve the
breed standard. The "ARTC" has hosted fun days, earth dog trials,
specialty shows, and educational seminars for the past 14 years.
We will continue to serve the breed in all aspects under the
perimeters of the AKC. We welcome all who may have an interest in
this wonderful old breed. Our members and breeders will be more
than happy to assist you in learning more about the Russell
Terrier. In 2007 we were pleased to have finish our educational
material Russell Terrier Amplified Guide for Judges and fanciers, now on line,
which is also available in CD format to those who would like additional education in
understanding the Russell Terrier. For information regarding obtaining a CD contact pam@cornrowkennel.com
